Businesses are facing increasing pressure to recycle more of their waste, including materials such as soft plastics and plastic film that have traditionally been harder to recycle.

With changes to soft plastics recycling requirements due to come into force from 1 April 2027, now is a good time for businesses to review how these materials are managed.

The good news is that many local businesses may already have access to a solution through Perth and Kinross Council's Commercial Waste Service.

Through the Council's grey-lidded commercial recycling bins, businesses can recycle all plastic packaging, including bottles, pots, tubs and trays, as well as soft plastics such as plastic bags and plastic film. Cans, food and drink cartons, and clean foil can also be collected through the same service.

With a range of containers sizes available, from small bins to larger commercial containers, businesses can choose a solution that suits their needs and helps them increase recycling while reducing the amount of waste sent for disposal.

Ruairidh Hanna, Waste Services Co-ordinator, said: “Changes to recycling legislation mean businesses need to be thinking now about how materials such as soft plastics are managed and recycled.

"Many businesses may not realise that soft plastics, including plastic bags and film, can already be recycled through our Commercial Waste Service. We're here to help businesses understand the changes, review their current arrangements and make sure they have a waste and recycling solution that works for them.

"By taking action now, businesses can be confident they are preparing for future requirements while improving their recycling performance and supporting a more sustainable Perth and Kinross."

More information on the upcoming waste collection changes can be found on the Scottish Government website.
